Daily Inspiration from the NIV
Jesus said,"The kingdom of heaven is like a net that was let down into the lake and caught all kinds of fish. When it was full, the fishermen pulled it up on the shore. Then they sat down and collected the good fish in baskets, but threw the bad away. This is how it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come and separate the wicked from the righteous."Matthew13:47-49

As I said last night, although the NIV is easier to read, the King James Version has always been clearer to me, because I enjoy the language they used.
And it says: Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a net, that was cast into the sea, and gathered of every kind: which, when it was full, they drew to shore, and sat down, and gathered the good into vessels, but cast the bad away. So shall it be at the end of the world: the angels shall come forth, and sever the wicked from among the just, (50) And shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

People today actively seek spirituality. Unfortunately, they don't always look to the Bible for guidance. Books like Conversations with God and The Seat of the Soul top the national best-seller lists. These books counsel readers to find their god within. They are full of Eastern religious or New Age ideas, not biblical truth. Psychic readers on television, telephone, or the internet offer to predict the future for a price. Cults like Scientology attract high-profile entertainers who deliver their message worldwide. Seeker-sen
sitive churches also grow] as people search for something to fill their inner void.

sitive churches also grow] as people search for something to fill their inner void. *** I chose this picture of the Bible because I feel like we ought to be as serious about our relationship with God and His Word as we are with our spouses if not more so.
Sometimes the message of Christianity gets watered down. We are tempted to take a good idea here or there and add it to ideas from the bible. Paul knew how dangerous it was to become distracted from the basic message for Jesus Christ and to get carried away by the popular teachings of the time--teachings that sounded nice or made people feel good. Paul warned the Colossians to be on guard against watering down the truth of Christ or being caught in the deceptions of hollow philosophies.
Paul described how Christians should live. They are to incorporate their actions and attitudes with their faith, taking an active role in keeping their faith founded on biblical truth.
Background Bulb: In Paul's time the church was being influenced by philosophies that were threatening the basic message that Jesus Christ is the only way to salvation. Some popular religious leaders of the day said tradition was more important than faith. Actions proved your salvation. Others said superior knowledge was the path to salvation. Still others taught that Christ was not really a human being and that sin was an illusion.
Weed & Water: Complacency is often the culprit that causes us to be led astray. We rely on others to teach us the truth. Often we don't check what we hear with what the Bible teaches. It takes hard work to evaluate everything we hear in the light of Scripture.
Society has so emphasized being tolerant of other's beliefs that the lines between truth and falsehood have blurred. Harassment and ridicule come if we are not "politically correct." We don't want to offend others, but we fail to remember that we may offend Christ. This week, search the Bible to find the truth about what you hear, do, and say. Then speak up for Christ.
Think about it: How do your current reading and listening choices line up with the principles of God's Word?
What changes do you need to make to ensure that Jesus' teachings underlie your philosophy?
