When There Are No Answers

Good Evening to All!

From the Inspirational Book "especially for MOMs"

A lot of times I run across stories like this one, or articles for a good cause, and since I don't have the money to contribute to these causes, I like to at least do a little part and get some notoriety for the specific problem, disease or cause. Such is the case of the following story.

WHEN THERE ARE NO ANSWERS

A mother wrote the following letter to the editors of Discovery magazine and here is what was printed:

To the Editors:

You won't find enclosed a picture of Peter, age 27. He's our son and he's autistic. During some of the past 27 years I have thought of murder, murder and suicide, running, moving away. I have never considered "putting him away." I have never visited any institutions, but I have a vivid imagination. I know that a non-verbal child would be in a living hell; therefore I, in my mind , turned to all those other grisly alternatives.

People (psychiatrists included) have said to me, "You must be special, because you cope so well," or "Your three daughters must be so compassionate." My favorite comment comes from a doctor, "Every family should have a handicapped child. It's good for the family. It unites them."

We could never do the "family things" except when Pewter went to camp for two months. My older children no longer live a t home and no longer insist that they will care for him forever.

The youngest, age 12, both loves and resents him and isn't too thrilled if he's around when friends visit. There isn't any answer. No body said it would all be fair. He exists, he is our son, we love him. I wish he had never been born.

It was signed by the Mother.

Because we live in a sinful, fallen, unfair, wicked, tough place...., not all life's stories will have a happy ending. There are tragedies that defy explanations There are situations too tough to live with... yet, there's a God and with Him all things become possible!

If you find yourself in such a situation, you may not find satisfactory answers to the "why" question, but there is a God in heaven who cares deeply about you, who loves you beyond all human love. He has made that fact very clear on the pages of His Word. I suggest that you begin reading from the Old Testament prophet, Isaiah Chapter 61.

I know this was not a "happily-ever-after story, but I felt it had to be spread. I am sure that there are more families going through this same situation or something similar. Just know that you have been given this "special child" for a reason even though God is the only one who knows why at this moment. ALWAYS REMEMBER that this child is God's creation just like a happy healthy one. The disease or disorder is not from God. He is a God of Healing, the Great Physician, so rest assured that He did not give your children this problem. When you start wondering why, just remember the story of Job. God did not Cause the problems although He did allow Satan to test Jobs faith. So keep your faith strong. My heart goes out and my prayers go up for you to have the strength to handle this special need. I have not been blessed with the ability to have children, but if I were and they were to be born with a physical or mental disorder, I would hope that I would cherish them just the same. Of course, it's easy to say this when I'm not in that particular situation, but as a Child of God, I hope that I would be "Christ-like enough to take on the attribute of compassion. Keep in mind it is NOT the child that is a "burden" but the disease or disorder. God Bless You ALL with the strength to handle this situation.

The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me, Because the Lord has anointed Me to preach good tidings to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives,
And the opening of the prison to those who are bound....
To comfort all who mourn.
(Isaiah 61:1, 2b)

My friend just adopted a 4 year old with severe medical needs: a trach, non-verbal, fed through a g-tube, etc. I can't imagine how she has the strength and love to do this, on her own. (Her husband died 2 years ago due to cancer). She is a wonderful person.
