Lasting Memorials

Good Evening to All!

Years ago, before I developed a true relationship with God, I had what I would call a notoriety issue. I used to blame it on my childhood years, and my failed marriages, being put down by my dad and school mates, and husbands (3). They were all good at letting me know what I was not good at, my appearance flaws, and so forth. Needless to say I had a very low self-esteem so when I did something well, I wanted to be acknowledged for it, whether it was cleaning the house well, getting good grades or whatever the case may be. I attribute it to over-compensating for my shortcomings.

Since I have gotten into church and learned a lot about the Word of God as well as what He expects of us, I no longer feel that way. I still have self-esteem issues, but not to that drastic point. The following Devotional has to do with Lasting Memorials.

I don't know what got me to thinking along those lines of thought, but to me a Memorial is a "legacy" which we leave of what people say and think about us and I would like to be remembered while I am alive as well as after I've passed away of being humble, and doing all I do in honor of my God , rather than in honor of PJ.

A memorial service is held in honor of a person who has gone on before us. We associate memorials with grief, death, burials, or tributes to fallen soldiers. Plaques and statues are erected to honor special citizens. But did you know that living memorials exist today?

Your words, actions, and deeds will not go unnoticed. Friends and family members will continue to reflect on your life and the contributions you made. by living a life that is pleasing to God, you are in essence leaving some sort of mark or memorial for future generations, whether you realize it or not. The circle of our influence is endless.

Jesus associated with people form all levels of society. He did not separate himself from those in lowly positions. In fact, his closest friends were fishermen, tax collectors, ordinary women, and even prostitutes. Mary, the sister of Martha and Lazarus, is an example of an ordinary person who left behind a godly heritage.

One day Jesus attended a dinner at the home of Simon at Bethany. We know from John 12:3 that Mary, sister of Martha and Lazarus, was there. Mary decided to demonstrate her love for Jesus. After opening an expensive jar of aromatic oil, she anointed his head with the fragrant oil. The disciples and those seated beside Jesus scoffed. "How could she waste this perfume?" they yelled.

The others could not understand her actions Her goal was to please her master. And in this way, she left a godly memorial.


Dig Deeper: The word translated "memory" in English means a reminder, memorial, or record. Mary's actions left a visible picture in the hearts of those who knew her best and on those who now read of her devotion. This memorial has been handed to us in Scripture.

Background Bulb: This account of Mary anointing Jesus' head is recorded twice in the New Testament, here in Mark and in Matthew 26:13. The two sisters were considered something of a hospitality team because Jesus was a frequent visitor to their house. Jesus had predicted his death, and it is thought that Mary took this news to heart. Perhaps this is why she chose to pour her perfume, often used in embalming, on Jesus while he was still alive.

Sprout & Scatter: Because Mary acted out of sincerity and not "showiness," Jesus mentioned her as one whose name would be referred to again and again. Each day we can take opportunities to leave living memorials. Can you nurture your children or parents through the lesson of Mary's life? If we live out our faith in a humble, consistent manner before others, we may never be honored with a plaque that say, "Dynamic Woman of the Year." But God sees our legacy. Make it your goal to be an example.


Think about it: Imagine yourself doing what Mary did. What would be the result?
